B8-0248/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on banning the import of cloned meat from China

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the world’s largest animal cloning site is being constructed in China, and whereas it will be used to mass produce dogs, horses and cows;

B.  whereas production in the port city of Tianjin is planned to start in 2016; whereas initially some 100 000 cow embryos will be produced every year, rising eventually to one million;

C.  whereas Europeans, and the French in particular, consistently refuse to consume genetically modified products, and whereas that same reluctance applies all the more to cloned products;

D.  whereas the precautionary principle and the respect due to the forms that nature has given to the way we produce and consume meat must be complied with in our societies, which have an attachment both to tradition and to high standards of production and animal welfare;

1.  Calls on the Commission to ban all meat imports from China for as long as animal cloning for commercial purposes is allowed there.
