Motion for a European Parliament resolution on hunting: an inclusive, sustainable and environmentally friendly activity

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas there are 7 million hunters in Europe, 1.3 million of them in France spread among 70 000 hunting associations, and whereas hunting generates 23 000 jobs and earnings of more than EUR 2.3 billion in France and more than EUR 16 billion in Europe as a whole;

B.  whereas hunters play a key role in regulating biodiversity and conserving our forests;

C.  whereas hunting is a significant means of social integration which enables people to develop a relationship with the countryside and thus a better understanding of ecosystems, and will continue to do so in the future;

D.  having regard to the hunting-related studies which have been conducted, including those carried out by the North-East Atlantic Scientific Institute (ISNEA);

1.  Calls on the Commission to allow Member States to set their own opening and closing dates for the hunting season, or, failing that, to amend or clarify the Birds Directive in order to reintroduce the traditional opening and closing dates for the hunting season for migratory birds (14 July to 28 February);

2.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
