Motion for a European Parliament resolution on promoting the role of the European Ombudsman  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 228 TFEU,

–  having regard to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union,

–  having regard to Directive 2008/52/EC on mediation,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the role of the Ombudsman is to help safeguard the rights of EU citizens and to optimise administrative efficiency in the institutions in line with the right to good administration;

B.  whereas the Ombudsman acts as an intermediary between the EU and its citizens in the context of their involvement in EU activities;

C.  whereas the Ombudsman scrutinises the administrative activities of the Union's institutions, bodies and agencies;

D.  whereas most Europeans currently know very little about the Ombudsman's work;

1.  Calls on the Commission to consider launching a campaign to raise awareness of the Ombudsman's role and the procedures for applying for assistance.
