Motion for a European Parliament resolution on noise pollution from machinery and equipment for outdoor use
B8-0280/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Directive 2000/14/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 8 May 2000,

–  having regard to Directive 2002/49/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 June 2002,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas noise pollution is one of the issues that need to be tackled if EU policy is to achieve the objective of providing a high level of protection for public health and the environment set for it by the Treaties;

B.  whereas, in its Green Paper on future noise policy, the Commission states that noise is one of the most serious problems affecting the environment in Europe;

C.  whereas noise from traffic and from industrial and recreational activities is a growing problem, and whereas an ever-increasing number of Europeans are being exposed to high noise levels;

1.  Calls on the Commission to revise the current noise limits and to encourage reduction of noise at the source, an approach which would cost far less than installing soundproofing and noise barriers.
