Motion for a European Parliament resolution on safeguarding the EU steel industry
B8-0290/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas steel producers in the EU are bearing the full brunt of the flood of cheap Chinese exports;

B.  whereas Eurofer figures show that 5000 jobs were lost in the EU steel industry during the third quarter of 2015;

C.  whereas the price of steel has plummeted, and whereas the price of Chinese steel arriving on the European market is EUR 290 per tonne, as compared to EUR 360 per tonne for steel made in Florange, for example;

D.  whereas most Chinese companies are state owned, and whereas their primary objective is to sell at all costs, rather than to make a profit;

E.  having regard to the EU anti-dumping investigation into Chinese steel plates;

1.  Calls on the Commission to introduce permanent protectionist measures, such as duties on Chinese steel and stainless steel products, to offset the dumping margin in full;

2.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
