Motion for a European Parliament resolution on tightening up legislation to tackle the counterfeiting of Italian and European leather goods

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the Italian leather industry alone accounts for more than half of all leather goods production in Europe;

B.  whereas the counterfeiting of 'made in Italy' products is having a direct effect on the Italian leather industry;

C.  whereas the counterfeiting of Italian goods has grown to alarming levels and is estimated to have caused EUR 1 billion of damage to the industry, which equates to roughly 4 000 jobs;

D.  whereas the fall in sales of authentic leather goods throughout the EU has resulted in lower VAT and tax revenues;

1.  Calls on the Commission to take special measures to reverse this upward trend in youth unemployment in Italy;

2.  Believes that action to tackle counterfeiting should be made a priority;

3.  Calls on the Commission to take special measures to tackle the problem.
