on raising awareness of food waste

Gianluca Buonanno

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on raising awareness of food waste

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas figures show that every year approximately 100 million tonnes of food, including a high percentage of agri-food products, ends up in the waste bin in Europe;

B.  whereas it would seem from these negative figures that awareness-raising actions taken to date are proving ever less effective in reducing food waste;

C.  whereas some forecasts predict that the lack of coordinated education and communication plans will be one of the main causes of a staggering rise in food waste in 2020, despite the fact that 80 million people in Europe already live below the poverty threshold;

1.  Believes that greater attention needs to be paid to this matter, which should be treated as a priority;

2.  Proposes that legislative action be taken and programmes and funding be planned that can encourage frequent awareness-raising actions to cut food-waste.
