Motion for a European Parliament resolution on increased checks on and inspections of imported foodstuffs
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas worrying figures reveal an exponential increase in cancer in agricultural regions where glyphosate is used;
B. whereas authoritative studies highlight how this powerful pesticide, present in massive doses in foodstuffs, increases the risk of contracting cancer;
C. whereas imports of foodstuffs exposed to the pesticide glyphosate from non-EU states are increasing all the time;
D. whereas, if checks were increased and there were more information on consumption of these foodstuffs, public expenditure in this area would decrease;
1. Takes the view that more attention should be paid to this issue, which should be regarded as a priority;
2. Proposes to the Commission a regulatory policy for increasing checks on and inspections of imports of foodstuffs that have been exposed to glyphosate.
