Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the pay gap between men and women

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Directive 2006/54/EC,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas equality between men and women is one of the fundamental principles of the European Union, given that the 1957 Treaty of Rome included the first reference to gender equality in terms of pay;

B.  whereas the establishment of a professional qualification system that uses common criteria for male and female workers to eliminate sexual discrimination is part of the Commission’s Europe 2020 strategy;

C.  whereas that work programme is only the latest in a series of interventions that have helped progress to be made on the issue, although legislation in the area has not been harmonised;

D.  whereas the gender pay gap in the EU is still 16% on average;

1.  Calls on the Commission to harmonise legislation to eliminate any differences in treatment among Member States.
