Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the employment of young people in agriculture

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Regulation (EU) No 1307/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the European Union is committed to hitting the targets set for the Europe 2020 strategy, one of which is to ensure the necessary conditions for EU industry to be competitive;

B.  whereas a strong farming sector and a thriving rural environment across the EU, ensured by a sustainable common agricultural policy, are vital components of tackling the food security challenge;

C.  whereas Europe has ever fewer farmers, owing to the hard work involved and the extent of the investment needed to set up a farm;

D.  whereas, currently, 30% of farmers in Europe (4.5 million) are aged over 65 and only 6% are aged under 35;

1.  Calls on the Commission to make the farming profession more attractive, and to help young people become farmers through programmes, projects and seminars.
