MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on waste electrical and electronic equipment

24.2.2016

pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

B8-0418/2016

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on waste electrical and electronic equipment

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Committee of the Regions opinion 52000AR0269(01),

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the Union’s environmental policy is based on the precautionary principle, the principle of preventive action and the principle that environmental damage should, as a priority, be rectified at source, as well as the principle that the ‘polluter pays’;

B.  whereas, as the market continues to expand and innovation cycles become shorter, equipment is replaced with increasing frequency, making the flow of waste increasingly large;

C.  whereas the failure to recycle results in the loss of valuable resources;

D.  whereas some Member States have legislation in place for managing waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), whilst others do not;

1.  Asks the Commission to reword the legislation in force, as this difference creates a certain number of potential problems for recycling, disparities in financial burdens and demand for replacement equipment.
