Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the fight against terrorism and hate speech on social networks  
B8-0517/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas social networks and the internet are effective means of communication;

 

B.  whereas terrorist organisations are increasingly using the internet and social networks to communicate, organise, expand, recruit followers and disseminate hate speech;

 

C.  whereas, according to Europol, 46 000 Twitter accounts are being used by Islamic State supporters and fighters on a regular basis to incite people to hatred and terrorism;

 

D.  whereas more than 4 000 Islamic State fighters have reportedly entered Europe as refugees with the intention of recruiting people to their cause and ultimately waging war;

 

1.  Calls on the Commission, the Council and the Member States to devise an effective anti-terrorism strategy for social networks;

 

2.    Instructs its President to forward this resolution, together with the names of the signatories, to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
