MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the establishment of a European Year of Tourism

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the establishment of a European Year of Tourism

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas European Years focus on specific subjects to encourage debate and dialogue both in Europe and nationally;

B.  whereas the tourism sector generates more than 10% of the European Union's GDP and employs nearly 10 million people in around 1.8 million companies; whereas Europe's share of the market currently stands at around 52%;

C.  whereas the unemployment rate is incredibly high in Mediterranean countries, in particular among young people, and the competitiveness of European tourism needs to be strengthened;

1.  Calls on the Commission to establish a European Year of Tourism in order to promote the diversity of European tourism and help raise the profile of the various operators in the tourism sector.
