Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a request for measures to promote information campaigns in order to reduce the abuse of antibiotics by European citizens
B8-0671/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Title XIV of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU),

–  having regard to the Commission communication to the Parliament and the Council entitled ‘Action plan against the rising threats from Antimicrobial Resistance’ (COM(2011)0748),

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas antibiotics are essential for the prevention and cure of infections;

B.  whereas, according to a British study, many antibiotics are now completely incapable of fighting infections as a result of an increase in the number of bacteria that are ‘super-resistant’ to these antibiotics;

C.  whereas, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, antimicrobial resistance should be considered a public health threat in Europe;

D.  whereas the leading cause of the onset of this global emergency is people’s abuse of antibiotics, using them to treat viral infections, and their decision to stop taking them as soon as symptoms clear up;

E.  whereas the ineffectiveness of antibiotics can lead to a greater spread of disease and reduce human life expectancy dramatically;

1.  Calls on the Commission to take steps to promote information campaigns in order to reduce the abuse of antibiotics by European citizens.
