on the new wave of migration from Libya to Italy and the terror alert

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the new wave of migration from Libya to Italy and the terror alert  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the joint report on the phenomenon of migration published on 17 May 2016 by Europol and Interpol noted that there are least 800 000 migrants who are prepared to leave Libya and head for Europe via the Mediterranean route that leads straight to Italy’s shores;

B.  whereas the report highlighted that in 2015, human trafficking generated turnover equal to almost USD 6 billion and 90% of migrants were brought to the EU by criminal networks;

C.  whereas FRONTEX and NATO have recently issued warnings that terrorists are entering the EU with illegal immigrants;

D.  whereas Europol raised the alarm on the European football championships set to take place in France, which are a very exposed target for new terror attacks by ISIS;

1.  Calls on the Commission and the Council to develop more effective policies that enable the EU to block this wave of migration as a matter of urgency and break up the criminal networks involved in human trafficking;

2.  Calls also on the Commission and the Council to strengthen anti-terror security measures to prevent possible attacks by ISIS in France and the EU.
