Aldo Patriciello

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on economic incentives for hotels which install air conditioning systems that are more energy-efficient and less polluting
B8-0947/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Commission communication 2014/C 110/01,

–  having regard to Commission communication COM(2016)51,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas every year during the summer months, many Member States experience a sharp rise in electricity consumption as a result of the excessive use of air conditioning systems;

B.  whereas these electrical appliances release a significant amount of CO2 into the atmosphere;

C.  whereas some sources suggest there are plans to install some 700 million air conditioning systems worldwide by 2030 and that, if this turns out to be the case, it will have a drastic impact on the environment;

D.  whereas, given such a scenario, installing more energy-efficient air conditioning systems would be a significant step forward in combating climate change;

E.  whereas reaching this objective calls for a commitment at international level and the involvement of all stakeholders most responsible for energy consumption, including hotels;

F.  whereas using air conditioning systems that are more energy-efficient in hotels would contribute significantly to achieving European energy objectives;

1.  Calls on the Commission to introduce economic incentives for hotels which install air conditioning systems that are more energy-efficient and less polluting, in a bid to encourage a joint effort in pursuing a global objective.
