Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the development and promotion of sustainable food production methods  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas farming methods have a huge impact on health, citizens’ wellbeing, ecosystems and climate change;

B.  whereas, according to the FAO, approximately three quarters of agricultural genetic diversity have disappeared in the last century;

C.  whereas demand for organic, local and seasonal produce is on the rise;

1.  Calls on the Commission to use the CAP to foster good farming practices whilst encouraging small producers to opt for sustainable, environmentally friendly and GMO-free food production methods;

2.  Calls on the Commission to promote the sustainable management of plant and animal resources in an effort to prevent over-production, which is harmful to the environment and is at odds with good economic and social practices;

3.  Calls on the Commission and the Member States to make sure that organic products are affordable not only to the more socially privileged parts of the population;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Member States.
