on the extension of EU sanctions against Russia

Marie-Christine Arnautu

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the extension of EU sanctions against Russia

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the Council decision of 1 July 2016 to prolong European Union sanctions against the Russian Federation until January 2017,

–  having regard to the resolutions adopted by the French National Assembly, the French Senate and the Parliament of Cyprus, respectively on 28 April, 8 June and 7 July 2016, calling for the sanctions to be lifted,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the Ukrainian Government is showing as much, if not more, unwillingness as its Russian counterpart to apply the Minsk II agreements of 12 February 2015;

B.  whereas the United States supports the extension of EU sanctions while stepping up its own trade with Russia, to the detriment of the Member States;

C.  whereas the Russian embargo on several European food products, decided in response to the EU sanctions, is severely and unfairly affecting numerous European producers;

1.  Considers it vital to restore calm in relations between Russia and the EU Member States, for both political and economic reasons;

2.  Calls on the Council, therefore, swiftly to review its decision of 1 July 2016;

3.  Calls for EU sanctions against Russia to be lifted immediately.
