Motion for a resolution of the European Parliament on measures to prevent counterfeiting
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Regulation (EU) No 608/2013,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas creativity and innovation are among the principal driving forces of growth; whereas the European Union is committed to protecting both the intellectual heritage and consumers;
B. whereas counterfeit goods, in particular toys, textiles and fashion items, are harmful to the health and safety of consumers; whereas, despite the existence of detailed rules regarding the production of such goods, customs statistics reveal that most of them are not manufactured in Europe and therefore fail to meet the requisite standards;
C. whereas counterfeiting does not only affect businesses and consumers, but is also a source of funding for organised crime;
D. whereas the complexity of a constantly changing digital environment, is still preventing the authorities from dealing with this type of economic crime;
E. whereas over 65 % of Europeans purchase products online;
1. Calls on the Commission to update its procedures for combating the online sale of counterfeit and dangerous goods.
