Motion for a European Parliament resolution on specific funding to support the Member States in managing medical expenses for the elderly
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Regulation (EU) No 549/2013,
– having regard to Commission Communication COM(2002)143 final,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the 28 EU Member States are now faced with a rapidly and progressively ageing population;
B. whereas this new demographic trend, accentuated by decreasing birth rates, risks having a negative impact on public spending by increasing the proportion of funding allocated to pensions and healthcare for the elderly;
C. whereas the Member States should take national measures to manage the situation, and whereas these measures cannot be homogenous and uniform in all the Member States;
D. whereas the European Union, although unable to interfere in matters that fall solely within the competence of the Member States, cannot ignore an issue of European citizenship;
1. Calls on the Commission to establish support mechanisms for the Member States, including, for example, specific funding for support in managing medical expenses for the elderly.
