The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas Boko Haram is a jihadist Salafist terrorist movement aiming to establish a caliphate and impose Sharia law that operates chiefly in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon and has pledged allegiance to Islamic state;

B.   whereas it has perpetrated numerous massacres, kidnappings and attacks against civilians, as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity and is considered a terrorist organisation;

C.   whereas, to name but two of its atrocities, it massacred between 150 and 2 000 people in Baga in January 2015, and kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in April 2014;

D.   whereas on Sunday 14 August 2016, Boko Haram broadcast a video showing some of the Chibok schoolgirls abducted in April 2014 alive, and whereas the Bring Back Our Girls movement was launched at that time, but the situation has only worsened since then;

1.  Calls on the Commission and Member States to engage more strongly in the fight against Boko Haram, support the African authorities and to take all necessary measures to protect civilians and religious minorities, particularly Christians, against Islamist terrorism.
