Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the lifting of European Union economic sanctions against the Russian Federation   
B8-1223/2016

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Council Regulations (EU) No 833/2014, (EU) No 960/2014 and (EU) No 1290/2014,

–  having regard to Article 215(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.whereas, since March 2014, the EU has adopted a number of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation in the wake of the situation in Ukraine;

B. whereas, in retaliation, in August 2014 Russia imposed a very wide-ranging embargo on food products from the EU;

C. whereas the Council of the European Union and the Russian Government have extended most of these measures respectively until 23 June and 31 December 2017;

1.  Notes that the sanctions adopted by the EU are having a serious adverse impact on the European economy, in particular for firms in the agricultural, energy and military sectors;

2.    Reiterates the priority that should be given to cooperation with Russia, in particular as regards resolving the crisis in the Middle East and combating terrorism;

3.    Calls on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Commission to propose that the Council lift all economic sanctions against the Russian Federation as soon as possible.
