pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

on support for the social and solidarity economy

Dominique Martin

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on support for the social and solidarity economy

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the institutions have a particularly favourable attitude towards the social and solidarity economy sector (SSE), while national policies adopted to promote it have often had discouraging results;

B.  whereas, situated at the opposite end of the spectrum to market economy principles, the SSE has the notable benefit of offering social status to all those who have been left behind by growth;

C.  whereas the ultraliberal system has a tendency to abandon the most disadvantaged in the race to globalisation, and whereas across Europe poverty rates keep rising constantly;

D.  whereas it therefore appears necessary to adopt further social policy measures;

1.  Calls on the Commission not to adopt social welfare dependence on a European scale as an official principle by supporting the SSE and a two-speed society;

2.  Calls on the Commission to ease the stranglehold of austerity, so as to enable Member States to restore adequate social protection policies.
