on a vaccine against atherosclerosis

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a vaccine against atherosclerosis  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas cardiovascular diseases cause 1.9 million deaths per year in the European Union, namely 40 % of overall mortality in the region, and whereas the EU’s ageing population means that their prevalence is likely to increase as age is the primary risk factor in these diseases;

B.  whereas in atherosclerosis lipid plaques (atheroma) form on the artery walls and can cause coronary thrombosis and strokes if they rupture, and whereas 80 % of sudden deaths are due to the rupture of plaques of atheroma;

C.  whereas scientific research based on regulating the inflammatory response to LDL cholesterol has made it possible to envisage the development of a vaccine against atherosclerosis, and whereas the University of Malmö and Stockholm Hospital are currently collaborating on this field of research as are the Italian Cardiology Society and the University of Arkansas;

1.  Encourages the Commission to support research into a vaccine against atherosclerosis and to facilitate licencing authorisation procedures when this becomes applicable.
