The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the H7N2 virus occurs chiefly in the United States and also in the United Kingdom, where it was found to have spread to humans in 2007;

B.  whereas the H7N2 virus mainly affects birds, but whereas cats have also been infected, as was established in the United States by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which detected the virus in cats at New York City animal shelters;

C.  whereas it was established on 22 December 2016 that a case of cat to human transmission had occurred, the person concerned being a vet working at one of those shelters;

1.  Urges the Commission, working through the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to set up an H7N2 virus alert mechanism in the EU in order to prevent a resurgence of infection in Europe;

2.  Calls on the Commission, working through the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to issue recommendations for persons whose occupations bring them into close contact with the animals concerned.
