The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the Zika virus continues to spread and, following reports of cases in Cape Verde and Angola, has now crossed from the Americas to Africa, and whereas migration and tourism are putting Europe at risk;

B.  whereas research into the virus regularly produces findings which may make the disease more preventable, e.g. the evidence that the virus remains present in urine and sperm for several months after infection, or the discovery of antibodies that may neutralise the virus;

1.  Calls on the Commission to support research into the Zika virus, which emerged relatively recently, with a view to finding suitable ways of tackling the epidemic.
