MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on chronic inflammatory diseases

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on chronic inflammatory diseases

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas auto-immune diseases are thought to affect 3% of the European population, but their prevalence is on the up;

B.  whereas a study carried out by the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Massachusetts, USA, has shown that chronic inflammatory auto-immune diseases share common proteins, Interleukin 7 and 15, which modulate TH-17 cells;

C.  whereas these results have deepened our understanding of auto-immune diseases, which obey identical biological processes;

1.  Encourages the Commission and Member States to support research into chronic inflammatory auto-immune diseases.
