on support for the preservation of the heritage of ethnic minorities in Europe

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on support for the preservation of the heritage of ethnic minorities in Europe  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which concerns the principle of non-discrimination,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas equality among all individuals is a core value of the European Union, which seeks to ensure equal rights and equal enjoyment of rights for all individuals living in Europe;

B.  whereas cultural diversity is one of the fundamental principles of the European Union, as enshrined in Article 22 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which states that ‘the Union shall respect cultural, religious and linguistic diversity’;

1.  Emphasises that respect for cultural diversity is an essential element of efforts to foster democratisation, human rights and conflict prevention;

2.  Calls for the Union to state clearly that ethnic minorities in Europe, such as Jews, Crimean Karaites, Sami, Roma and Muslims, have the right to see their cultural heritage respected and protected in any Member State;

3.  Urges the Member States to pay particular attention to monuments, buildings, cemeteries and everyday implements which are of great importance to the cultural heritage of minority peoples, and to engage in enhanced cooperation by including them in any decision-making process that affects their cultural heritage.
