Motion for a European Parliament resolution on developing macro-regional sub-strategies for the Mediterranean
The European Parliament,
– having regard to its report of 27 June 2012 on the evolution of EU macro-regional strategies: present practice and future prospects, especially in the Mediterranean,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas macro-regional strategies are playing an increasingly important role in the EU’s cohesion policies;
B. whereas the Mediterranean is an area with a unique culture and environment made up of countries which share a number of characteristics and priorities: the same crops, the same abundance of renewable energy, the same dependence on tourism, the same risk of natural disasters;
C. whereas a macro-regional strategy for the Mediterranean would enable the EU to optimise its spending in the area and address the issues faced by all the Member States there;
D. whereas a new strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian macro-region (central Mediterranean) has been developed, and whereas there is a need to continue developing macro-regional sub-strategies, given the vastness of the area in question;
1. Calls on the Commission to develop two macro-regional strategies, one for the western Mediterranean and one for the eastern Mediterranean, which could overlap with one another and with the central Mediterranean strategy.
