    MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on establishing a European Sustainable Tourism Region of the Year (ESTRY)

    pursuant to Rule 133 of the Rules of Procedure

    Aldo Patriciello

    Motion for a European Parliament resolution on establishing a European Sustainable Tourism Region of the Year (ESTRY)

    The European Parliament,

    –  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

    A.  whereas sustainable tourism means a way of travelling which takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities (Making Tourism More Sustainable - A Guide for Policy Makers, UNEP and UNWTO, 2005, pp. 11-12);

    B.  whereas the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, acknowledging that the latter spreads awareness of the great heritage of various civilisations, leads to a greater appreciation of the intrinsic values of different cultures and, accordingly, promotes peace-building in the world (resolution A/RES/70/193);

    C.  whereas in 2015 Europe was the fastest growing region in absolute terms, with 27 million more tourists than in 2014 (UNWTO Tourism Highlights, 2016);

    D.  whereas European cities, regions and municipalities are key pillars to foster sustainable and competitive tourism (Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organisation, Brussels, 7 December 2016);

    1.  Calls on the Commission to promote the establishment of a European Sustainable Tourism Region of the Year (ESTRY) and to set up a fund to encourage the establishment of sustainable tours in an EU region on an annual basis.
