Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a trade and import ban for the hormone eCG
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas ‘blood’ farms, where mares are held in boxes and have 10 litres of blood drawn from them twice a week, have been established in several South American countries, including Argentina and Uruguay;
B. whereas this blood, the drawing of which causes suffering to the animals concerned, is collected in order to obtain a hormone called eCG, which is secreted by a mare’s placenta between the 40th and 120th day of gestation; whereas when the placentas stop secreting the hormone, the mares are aborted by hand without anaesthesia;
C. whereas the hormone eCG is imported into Europe by laboratories and by pig, cattle and sheep farmers in order to increase reproduction rates and boost production; whereas intensive farming of this kind also causes terrible suffering to the animals concerned;
1. Calls on the Commission to impose a ban on trading in and the importing of the hormone eCG.
