The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Regulation (EU) No 661/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 May 2014 amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2012/2002 establishing the European Union Solidarity Fund[1],

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas Hurricane Irma caused considerable material damage, already estimated at several billion euros, in islands belonging to EU Member States such as Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands;

B.  whereas the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) represents an expression of European solidarity by providing financial assistance to EU Member States facing natural disasters causing direct damage whose cost exceeds 1% of regional GDP in the case of outermost regions;

C.  whereas the EUSF can be used to finance essential emergency operations and contribute financially to the reconstruction of infrastructure in regions affected by a natural disaster;

1.  Calls on the Commission to mobilise the Solidarity Fund as swiftly as possible for EU Member State regions affected by Hurricane Irma;

2.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and the Member States.
