Motion for a European Parliament resolution on raising awareness to combat food waste

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas food waste is not only a question of food: to reach our table, the food we eat has required the investment of numerous natural resources;

B.  whereas since 1974, global food waste has increased by 50 %, but only recently, owing to the global economic crisis, has the issue been treated as a real problem;

C.  whereas food waste worldwide is a dramatic reality, given that, according to data compiled by the FAO, each year more than 1.3 billion tonnes of food are thrown into waste bins;

D.  whereas, in accordance with Article 3(11) of the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC), the EU intends to prevent waste by reducing the amount of waste, through the re-use of products or extension of their life spans, and reduce the adverse impacts of waste on the environment and human health, or the content of harmful substances in materials and products;

1.  Calls on the Commission to launch awareness-raising campaigns to improve the conduct of those who do not comply with EU rules or respect populations suffering from malnutrition.
