Motion for a European Parliament resolution on violence against women
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas 62 million women have suffered physical and sexual violence;
B. whereas according to the data processed by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, a third of these women live in Europe;
C. whereas even though authorities do not report the violence suffered by women, it is a criminal act that is widespread in the Member States and that infringes human rights;
D. whereas the EU is at the forefront when it comes to combating violence against women, as evidenced by Directive 2012/29/EU and by the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention;
1. Calls on the Commission to adopt a new proposal for a regulation or directive aimed at raising public awareness of this crime.
