Ivan Jakovčić, Jozo Radoš

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on fighting air pollution in cities

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the Paris Agreement on climate change,

–  having regard to the opinion of the European Committee of the Regions of 8 February 2017 entitled ‘Towards a new EU climate change adaptation strategy - taking an integrated approach’,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas most people living in European cities are exposed to poor air quality;

B.  whereas the latest estimates by the European Environment Agency (EEA) show that fine particulate matter continues to cause the premature death of more than 400 000 Europeans annually;

C.  whereas it is encouraging to see that many European governments, and, specifically, cities are showing leadership in protecting people’s health by improving air quality;

1.  Emphasises that cities, in coordinated interdependence with national and regional authorities, need to play a decisive role in tackling climate change;

2.  Calls on local and regional authorities to provide consumers with more accurate information about the exact levels of pollution that cars emit so they can make better‑informed decisions about which vehicles they drive;

3.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
