Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the role of local food production in reducing CO2 emissions  

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the EU is the world’s largest exporter of agricultural products and must ensure viable production while safeguarding the sustainable management of natural resources;

B.  whereas the EU’s food sector has to reduce its environmental footprint;

C.  whereas locally produced seasonal food can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and, therefore, the overall carbon footprint of food production;

D.  whereas local food production, particularly agri-food production covered by protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI) quality certification, can contribute to the economic and social development of the EU’s regions, preventing depopulation;

1.  Calls on local authorities to conduct information campaigns in order to raise awareness about the carbon footprint of food;

2.  Calls on the Commission to work with the food sector in order to increase local and regional sustainable food production;

3.  Urges the national authorities to implement the subsidiarity principle more effectively, thereby enabling local and regional authorities to play a stronger role in tackling climate change;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
