The European Parliament,

A.  whereas the EU is the world’s largest exporter of agricultural products and must ensure viable production while safeguarding the sustainable management of natural resources;

B.  whereas the EU’s food sector has to reduce its environmental footprint;

C.  whereas locally produced seasonal food can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and, therefore, the overall carbon footprint of food production;

D.  whereas local food production, particularly agri-food production covered by protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI) quality certification, can contribute to the economic and social development of the EU’s regions, preventing depopulation;

1.  Calls on local authorities to conduct information campaigns in order to raise awareness about the carbon footprint of food;

2.  Calls on the Commission to work with the food sector in order to increase local and regional sustainable food production;

3.  Urges the national authorities to implement the subsidiarity principle more effectively, thereby enabling local and regional authorities to play a stronger role in tackling climate change;

4.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
