Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the strategy to develop Sicily as the main EU logistics hub for trade with Africa

The European Parliament,

 having regard to its resolution of 16 November 2017 on the EU-Africa Strategy: a boost for development and the Commission Communication on a new Africa- Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs (COM(2018)643), with particular reference to the so-called EU External Investment Plan for Africa,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas Sicily, covering an area of 25 426 km² and with a population of more than 5 million, is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is located midway between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal;

B. whereas tackling the root causes of emigration depends closely and directly on the stability and economic development of the African continent;

C. whereas the EU is currently Africa’s largest trading partner, the main investor in the African continent and the most important destination market for products manufactured in this part of the world; whereas it is estimated that by 2050 there will be 2.5 billion people living in Africa;

1. Calls on the Commission to take measures to promote Sicily as the main EU logistics hub for trade with Africa.
