European Parliament resolution on the climate and environmental emergency
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the statements by the Council and the Commission of 25 November 2019 on the climate and environmental emergency,
– having regard to Rule 132(2) of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas the debate on the real effects of climate change is still ongoing; whereas the contribution of human action to climate change, if this is decisive, has yet to be measured accurately;
1. Notes that putting forward ‘emergencies’ in an ideological manner risks fomenting and institutionalising a regrettable intergenerational clash, rather than favouring a weighted debate;
2. Firmly rejects these attempts to establish a perennial state of exception with no room for alternatives, which have the effect of forcing homologation in the scientific community and the public debate;
3. Is extremely worried about the fideistic approach to the ‘ecological transition’ demonstrated during the hearings by the Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen and many Commissioners-designate, as well as several political groups, which pushes the EU’s political agenda towards unrealistic goals;
4. Is committed to bringing environmental subject-matter back into the context of rational discussion and reconciliation between environmental and social policies, focusing on the most polluting aspects of our production and consumption model;
5. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the governments and parliaments of the Member States.
