Motion for a European Parliament resolution on European nationals in Syria
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 8 of the Treaty on European Union,
– having regard to Article 20(2)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union on diplomatic or consular protection in a third country,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas Turkey continues to be a member of the Union for the Mediterranean despite its recent provocations with regard to international peace and EU Member States;
B. whereas, after years of conflict, there needs to be a realistic attitude towards the lawful government of Syria;
1. Regrets the closure of many Member State diplomatic representations in Syria;
2. Acknowledges that the international sanctions on Syria affect the daily lives of citizens who are nationals of EU Member States;
3. Acknowledges that this situation is particularly dangerous for women and children, who have only partial consular or diplomatic protection;
4. Encourages the Commission to work towards the restoration of diplomatic relations with Syria;
5. Urges the European External Action Service to cease all support for international embargoes which have proved harmful in Syria, or at least, for humanitarian reasons, the embargo on medical products.
