Motion for a European Parliament resolution on a European Union Fire Safety day

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Article 196 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

 having regard to Decision (EU) 2019/420 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 March 2019 amending Decision No 1313/2013/EU on a Union Civil Protection Mechanism[1],

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas in Europe we are witnessing worrying numbers of fires every day, causing serious material damage, physical injuries and death;

B. whereas every year, natural and human-induced fires endanger cities and villages, imperilling their citizens and cultural heritage sites;

C. whereas the EU should optimise the use of its instruments, such as the Civil Protection Knowledge Network, for education about and the promotion of fire safety and prevention;

1. Calls for the establishment of a European Union Fire Safety day in order to raise awareness of the importance of fire safety;

2. Calls for 31 May to be designated the EU Fire Safety Day as an act of remembrance for the Great Fire of Zagreb in 1731 and other deadly fires in the history of Europe.
