Motion for a European Parliament resolution on protecting the ecosystem and tourism in mountainous areas from the growing presence of wolves

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas wolves can have a negative impact on sustainable socio-economic and ecological development in rural areas, as stated in European Parliament resolution 2017/2819;

B. whereas, in recent years, Italy has seen a considerable proliferation of wolves in mountainous and foothill areas;

C. whereas the presence of wolves, at times close to residential areas, presents a danger to people and livestock, and means mountain tourism is not safe;

D. whereas mountain tourism and the associated economic activities are essential to the development of entire rural areas in Italy, as they help ward off the threat of depopulation and hydrogeological risk;

1. Urges the Commission to assess measures for curbing the proliferation of wolves, in order to safeguard the survival of socio-economic activity in mountainous and foothill areas;

2. Calls on the Commission to support and promote activities, such as sustainable tourism, which have a positive impact on mountainous ecosystems.
