Motion for a European Parliament resolution on increasing funding for higher education in the EU
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,
– having regard to the Commission communication of 7 December 2016 entitled ‘Improving and modernising education’,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas strengthening education is a tool for encouraging citizens' creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship;
B. whereas, in an increasingly globalised and digitalised world, there is a need for advanced and appropriate learning and teaching methods and adequate educational infrastructure;
C. whereas investment in education is a means of promoting long-term economic growth and ensuring economic competitiveness and prosperity;
D. whereas effective investment in higher education and innovation is crucial to attaining the objective of the transition to clean technologies;
E. whereas the cost of higher education per capita in the EU varies by more than 16 times;
1. Calls on the European Parliament and the Commission to increase funding for higher education and to support Member States in developing, promoting and improving training and education programmes.
