MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on increasing funding for higher education in the EU

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on increasing funding for higher education in the EU

The European Parliament,

 having regard to Article 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

 

 having regard to the Commission communication of 7 December 2016 entitled ‘Improving and modernising education’,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas strengthening education is a tool for encouraging citizens' creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship;

 

B. whereas, in an increasingly globalised and digitalised world, there is a need for advanced and appropriate learning and teaching methods and adequate educational infrastructure;

 

C. whereas investment in education is a means of promoting long-term economic growth and ensuring economic competitiveness and prosperity;

 

D. whereas effective investment in higher education and innovation is crucial to attaining the objective of the transition to clean technologies;

 

E. whereas the cost of higher education per capita in the EU varies by more than 16 times;

 

1. Calls on the European Parliament and the Commission to increase funding for higher education and to support Member States in developing, promoting and improving training and education programmes.
