Motion for a European Parliament resolution on countering Islamic extremism at international level
The European Parliament,
– having regard to the unsuccessful efforts that have been made for 20 years to counter Islamist terrorism,
– having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas active Islamist networks are targeting European societies, through terrorism, demographic/social disruption and the threat of war;
Β. whereas these networks have links with the governments of Turkey, Pakistan, Qatar and, more recently, Afghanistan;
C. whereas the above governments are stepping up their actions and rhetorical discourse, while maintaining close connections with Islamist networks;
1. Recognises the need for a comprehensive reassessment of counter-terrorism strategy, giving priority to the immediate and effective containment of illegal migration flows and the neutralisation of Islamist terrorist cells;
2. Calls on the Commission and the Council to draw up within the year a multi-level, coherent and comprehensive internal and external strategy to tackle radical Islam effectively and sustainably at international level.
