MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the urgent launch of wide-reaching Australia-style communication campaigns targeting diaspora communities, transit countries and countries of origin to deter illegal migration and people smuggling

Motion for a European Parliament resolution on the urgent launch of wide-reaching Australia-style communication campaigns targeting diaspora communities, transit countries and countries of origin to deter illegal migration and people smuggling

The European Parliament,

 having regard to migratory trends and ongoing events at the EU’s external border with Belarus,

 having regard to statements by Commissioner Johansson that the EU has to ‘warn people from going’ to Minsk in order to try to enter the EU illegally,

 having regard to campaigns launched by the government of Poland warning against illegal entry through the border with Belarus,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas Australia has a long history of conducting effective campaigns to inform and educate people about the Australian government’s tough policy to combat maritime people smuggling, highlighting the realities of hazardous sea journeys, the financial risks of engaging people smugglers,their deception and lies, and the consequences of illegal migration by sea to Australia;

B. whereas best practices in such deterrence campaigns include clear and concise messaging (‘No Way’, ‘Zero Chance’);

1. Welcomes an evaluation of current EU information and awareness campaigns with the goal of levelling up to meet 21st century needs;

2. Calls on the Commission to without delay launch wide-reaching Australia-style communication campaigns targeting diaspora communities, transit countries and countries of origin in order to deter illegal migration and people smuggling.
