Right of access to a lawyer in criminal proceedings and right to communicate upon arrest (A7-0228/2013 - Elena Oana Antonescu)

Pino Arlacchi (S&D), in writing. − I voted in favour of Parliamentʼs proposal because anyone anywhere in the EU will have the right of access to a lawyer as soon as possible after the moment they are questioned by the police or deprived of their liberty, in order to be able to exercise their rights to defence. I believe that all European citizens must have the security of knowing they benefit from the same guarantees in all Member States. In addition, thanks to this proposal, in a change to current proceedings in many EU countries, the suspectʼs or detaineeʼs lawyer will be entitled to play an active role and intervene during the questioning, including where people are suspected of being involved in terrorist activity.
