Specific actions in the Common Fisheries Policy for developing the role of women (A7-0070/2014 - Dolores García-Hierro Caraballo, Raül Romeva i Rueda)

Lívia Járóka (PPE), in writing. - Women play a key role in most social groups, as is the case in fishing communities. Their contribution to collective success is crucial, both through their labour, which creates considerable economic added value, and through their managing of households. However, women’s work in fishing and related activities is often invisible, complementing the work carried out by their partners in an economic climate that is becoming increasingly harsh for family businesses. In these situations, there are no fixed wages or social benefits – such as health insurance or pension rights – even though, for most of them, this activity is their only source of income. One of the most important clauses in this report is the call for the accessibility of statistical data and for the collection of gender-disaggregated data to gain a detailed picture of women’s current working situation in fisheries and aquaculture. Member States must ensure – notably through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund – that young people and women in the fisheries sector have access to on-going training so that they can improve their position in the fisheries labour market, with a view to promoting women’s role and ensuring that they are present in all representative bodies.
