John Attard-Montalto (S&D), in writing. - When discussing the European Maritime Safety Agency consideration needs to be given to the difficulties of having one agency when Europe has numerous seas: the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the European north-east Atlantic, the Bay of Biscay. Pollution of the seas is a major concern, especially from tankers carrying fuel fossils or toxic materials. Response to pollution has to be coordinated, preferably at a regional level, so that the response time is kept at a minimum. One central maritime safety agency can be redeployed from one area to another. To conclude, I do believe in having a central maritime agency for the major European seas with the ability to respond immediately to contain pollution.
