  Presidente. – Prima di dare la parola al primo Vicepresidente della Commissione e alla sig.ra Kalniņa-Lukaševica, ho il grande piacere di informarvi che una delegazione del parlamento indiano ha preso posto nella galleria dei visitatori ufficiali. Posso estendere un caloroso benvenuto alla delegazione indiana guidata dal presidente del Lok Sabha, l'on. Sumitra Mahajan.

La delegazione è qui oggi su invito del Presidente per rafforzare i legami tra i nostri due parlamenti. Gli incontri tra il parlamento indiano e il Parlamento europeo hanno luogo dal 1981. L'importanza dell'India per l'Unione europea è in crescita come riflesso del partenariato strategico istituito nel 2004, e la nostra delegazione per le relazioni con l'India ha intrapreso una serie di visite nel paese, la più recente nel marzo di quest'anno, quando il Presidente ha avuto il piacere di invitare l'onorevole presidente del parlamento indiano a Bruxelles.

È un piacere accogliere qui oggi i nostri amici e colleghi del Lok Sabha. Speriamo che la vostra visita al Parlamento europeo, che è cominciata all'inizio di questa settimana e si conclude oggi, sia stata positiva e che possa contribuire ad accrescere l'amicizia e la comunicazione tra i nostri parlamenti nei prossimi anni.

Ora do la parola per un brevissimo saluto all'on. Van Orden, presidente della delegazione parlamentare Unione europea-India.

  Geoffrey Van Orden (ECR). – Mr President, I shall be brief. It is indeed a great honour and pleasure to have the speaker of a parliament that represents over a billion people in India, the largest democracy in the world, and it is the first time we have had the Speaker of the Lok Sabha here in 16 years, so it is a particular honour and pleasure. I did say in our discussions earlier that there were many views about the future of Europe, and I think listening to the discussion in the last few minutes she will have had a flavour of some of that variety of views.

Parliamentarians can be extremely helpful in pushing forward the relationship with a great country like India. We do need the summit which now is going to take place in November, we do need to make progress on the Free Trade Agreement, and thanks to the efforts of parliamentarians on both sides, I hope that will now go forward at a more accelerated pace. I would just share two very brief words that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha mentioned in her discussion with us earlier today: ‘Nurture nature’ was one of the things that she mentioned to us, and the other was that we should take less, and give more. I think these were very wise words and ones that we could all remember. You are very welcome.
