Marlene Mizzi (S&D), in writing. ‒ The concept of the blue economy covers a wide range of economic sectors linked to the seas and oceans, spanning traditional and emerging sectors including for instance fisheries, aquaculture, ports and logistics, tourism, shipbuilding and ship-repairing, protection of the coastline, prospecting for, and exploitation of, offshore mineral and energy resources, biotechnology. Oceans and seas can be source of growth, jobs, food, medicine and energy while protecting ecosystems for generations to come if they are managed in a responsible and sustainable manner. However, in order to make this possible, more research, knowledge, skills and data about our seas and oceans are needed. Therefore, I have voted in favour of this report on the research and innovation in the blue economy because it is essential for creating jobs and growth.
