Derek Vaughan (S&D), in writing. ‒ I voted in favour of this report, which aims at developing our scientific knowledge base for the seas, oceans and coastal areas as well as at a greater ability to use, manage and conserve the resources therein. A better management of our blue economy is the key to many of the problems facing our society, including developing sustainable energy sources and energy independence. The focus of the EU actions should be on creating sustainable growth and employment in the marine and maritime economy, and generating growth in areas such as developing offshore renewable energy technologies or supporting research into the blue biotechnology sector. This will not only promote economic growth but also promote the sustainable use of our natural resources wherever they may be.
